Kebbi Hisbah releases two women arrested for indecent dressing

The Kebbi State Hisbah Board has released two women who were earlier arrested for what authorities described as “indecent dressing” in Birnin Kebbi, the state capital.

According to officials, the women were apprehended during a routine patrol by Hisbah operatives, who enforce moral and Islamic codes in parts of northern Nigeria. They were later taken into custody for questioning before being released after what the board called “proper counselling and advice.”

A spokesperson for the board said the women were warned to dress in a way considered appropriate within the cultural and religious norms of the state. He also added that the Hisbah would continue its sensitisation efforts rather than focusing solely on arrests.

The incident has once again drawn attention to the role of the Kebbi State Hisbah Board and similar moral enforcement agencies in northern Nigeria, where dress code enforcement remains a sensitive and debated issue between cultural, religious, and human rights perspectives.

So far, no formal charges were filed, and the case has been resolved at the administrative level.
