Limoncello Tiramisu

Limoncello tiramisu is a bright, citrusy twist on the classic Italian dessert. Instead of coffee and cocoa, this version uses lemon, mascarpone cream, and limoncello liqueur to create a light, refreshing dessert with a smooth, creamy texture and a zesty finish.

It’s perfect for summer gatherings or as a fresh alternative to traditional tiramisu.

Lemon soak:

  • ¾ cup water
  • ½ cup sugar
  • ½ cup limoncello (optional but traditional)
  • Zest of 1 lemon
  • 2–3 tbsp fresh lemon juice

Cream layer:

  • 2 cups mascarpone cheese
  • 1 ½ cups heavy cream (cold)
  • ¾ cup powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Zest of 1–2 lemons

Layers:

  • 1–2 packs ladyfinger biscuits (savoiardi)

Topping:

  • Lemon zest
  • Crushed biscuits or white chocolate shavings
  • Optional: candied lemon slices

Step 1: Making the lemon syrup

  1. In a small saucepan, combine water and sugar.
  2. Heat until sugar dissolves completely.
  3. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
  4. Stir in limoncello, lemon juice, and lemon zest.

The syrup should be fragrant, sweet, and tangy—this replaces the coffee soak in traditional tiramisu.

Step 2: Preparing the cream

  1. In a bowl, whip heavy cream until soft peaks form.
  2. In another bowl, mix mascarpone, powdered sugar, vanilla, and lemon zest until smooth.
  3. Gently fold whipped cream into the mascarpone mixture.

The result should be light, fluffy, and creamy with a bright lemon aroma.

Step 3: Assembling the tiramisu

  1. Quickly dip ladyfingers into the lemon syrup (do not soak too long or they will fall apart).
  2. Arrange a layer of soaked ladyfingers in a dish.
  3. Spread a generous layer of lemon mascarpone cream on top.
  4. Repeat layers: ladyfingers → cream → ladyfingers → cream.

Finish with a smooth cream layer on top.

Step 4: Chilling

  1. Cover and refrigerate for at least 6 hours, preferably overnight.
  2. This allows the flavors to meld and the texture to set properly.

Chilling is essential for the tiramisu structure.

Step 5: Garnishing and serving

Before serving:

  • Sprinkle lemon zest on top
  • Add white chocolate shavings or crushed biscuits
  • Optional: decorate with candied lemon slices

Slice and serve chilled.

Flavor profile

Limoncello tiramisu is:

  • 🍋 Bright and citrusy
  • 🍰 Creamy and rich from mascarpone
  • 🍪 Soft and sponge-like from ladyfingers
  • 🍸 Lightly boozy (if limoncello is used)
  • 🍯 Sweet but balanced with acidity

It feels lighter than coffee tiramisu but still indulgent.

Berry limoncello tiramisu

Add layers of strawberries or raspberries between cream.

Coconut lemon version

Mix coconut cream into mascarpone for a tropical twist.

White chocolate version

Add melted white chocolate into the cream layer.

Non-alcoholic version

Replace limoncello with lemon juice + extra syrup.

Tips for best results

  • Don’t over-soak ladyfingers
  • Use cold mascarpone for better texture
  • Fresh lemon zest makes a big difference
  • Chill overnight for best structure
  • Balance sweetness with lemon juice if needed

Limoncello tiramisu is a refreshing reinvention of a classic dessert. It keeps the creamy, layered structure of traditional tiramisu but replaces coffee richness with bright lemon flavor, making it lighter and more summery.

It’s elegant, simple to assemble, and perfect for dinner parties or special occasions where you want something familiar—but with a citrusy twist.
