South Africa midfielder Themba Zwane has been handed a three-match suspension by FIFA following his red card in Bafana Bafana’s opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup against Mexico.
Zwane was sent off late in South Africa’s 2-0 defeat after officials ruled that he struck Mexico defender Roberto Alvarado in the face during the encounter.
While red cards typically carry an automatic one-match suspension, FIFA’s disciplinary committee reviewed the incident and decided to impose a harsher punishment. As a result, the 36-year-old midfielder will miss South Africa’s remaining Group A matches, including a crucial clash against the Czech Republic.
FIFA noted that red cards normally result in a one-match ban, but disciplinary reviews can lead to additional sanctions depending on the severity of the offence. However, South Africa could still seek to overturn or reduce the suspension through a successful appeal.
FIFA has extended South African midfielder Themba Zwane’s suspension to three matches following his red card in South Africa’s 2–0 loss to Mexico in their opening 2026 FIFA World Cup match. FIFA’s disciplinary committee increased the automatic one-match ban after reviewing the incident and classifying it as a more serious offense.
Zwane was sent off for striking Mexico’s Roberto Alvarado in the face during the match. As a result, he is set to miss South Africa’s remaining Group A fixtures and may not play again in the tournament unless South Africa advances to the knockout stage.
South Africa coach Hugo Broos criticized the decision, arguing that the punishment was too harsh and suggesting there had been inconsistencies in FIFA’s disciplinary rulings.
The suspension is subject to appeal by the South African Football Association.
