Former Germany midfielder Toni Kroos has explained why Cristiano Ronaldo continues to start for Portugal at the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite growing criticism following Portugal’s 1-1 draw with DR Congo.
According to Kroos, Ronaldo is not in the starting lineup simply because of his legendary status. He argued that the 41-year-old remains Portugal’s most effective penalty-box attacker and still offers qualities that few other Portuguese forwards can match. Kroos reportedly said that Ronaldo is “still their best attacker in the area,” making him a valuable option when Portugal need a clinical finisher.
However, Ronaldo’s role has come under scrutiny after a quiet performance in Portugal’s World Cup opener, where he failed to score as Portugal were held by DR Congo. The result sparked debate among pundits and fans about whether coach Roberto Martínez should continue starting him or use him as an impact substitute.
Despite the criticism, Ronaldo remains a key figure for Portugal, bringing leadership, experience, and a record-breaking goal-scoring pedigree as he competes in his sixth World Cup.
