Nigeria among World’s most expensive countries for airline operations – IATA.

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready…

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has again identified Nigeria as one of the world’s most expensive countries in which to operate an airline, citing high taxes, charges, airport fees, fuel costs, and other operational expenses.

According to IATA, the high-cost environment makes it difficult for Nigerian airlines to remain competitive and profitable, while also contributing to higher ticket prices for passengers.

Some of the major factors highlighted include:

  • Multiple aviation taxes and regulatory charges.
  • High airport and passenger service fees.
  • Expensive fuel and maintenance costs.
  • Additional security and data-related levies on international passengers.

IATA has also noted that aviation charges across parts of Africa, including Nigeria, are significantly above global averages, which can discourage travel, reduce demand, and weaken regional connectivity.

The association has called on governments in West Africa to reduce aviation taxes and charges, arguing that lower costs could stimulate passenger traffic, improve airline profitability, and support economic growth.

The issue comes at a difficult time for the global airline industry, which is already facing rising fuel costs and operational pressures linked to international geopolitical tensions.

For travelers in Nigeria, these costs often translate into more expensive domestic and international airfares compared with many other markets.
