New York’s Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) is known for its famous names — but this isn’t “Club Fed”

Metropolitan Detention Center, Brooklyn — often called MDC Brooklyn — is one of the most well-known federal detention facilities in the United States, largely because of the number of famous and high-profile inmates who have spent time there, including Luigi Mangione, Nicolás Maduro, and Sean “Diddy” Combs.
Despite sometimes being nicknamed “Club Fed” online, reports from inmates, attorneys, journalists, and federal investigations describe conditions that are often harsh and stressful rather than luxurious.
Common complaints and reported conditions include:
Frequent lockdowns keeping inmates in cells for long hours Violence and fights between inmates Contraband smuggling problems Overcrowding and understaffing Poor sanitation and cold temperatures Limited visitation during security incidents Strict routines and heavy surveillance
Federal prosecutors recently announced criminal charges tied to violence and contraband smuggling inside the jail, including assaults and weapons smuggling schemes.
The facility has faced criticism for years over inmate safety and living conditions. News reports and former detainees have described sudden lockdowns, restricted movement, and tense day-to-day conditions.
High-profile inmates are sometimes housed separately from the general population for security reasons. Reports suggest these special units may offer slightly different living arrangements, such as dorm-style housing instead of standard cells, but they are still highly controlled prison environments.
The jail has also become known because of the unusual mix of famous detainees who have passed through it over the years, including business executives, politicians, musicians, and organized crime figures.
