The Bear has just dropped a surprise standalone prequel episode titled “Gary”, and it features powerful performances from Jon Bernthal and Ebon Moss-Bachrach.

What the surprise episode is

The episode, released without warning on Hulu and Disney+, is a flashback story set before Season 1 of the series.

It follows:

Richie (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) Mikey (Jon Bernthal)

on a work trip to Gary, Indiana.

Why it matters

Instead of focusing on the restaurant chaos the show is known for, this episode dives into:

the early friendship between Richie and Mikey Mikey’s mental health struggles before the events of the main series the emotional foundation of Richie’s character arc

It basically recontextualizes a lot of what viewers already know about Season 1.

What makes it different

It is a standalone “bonus” episode, not officially labeled as part of a season It was co-written by Bernthal and Moss-Bachrach themselves  It only features a small cast, focusing almost entirely on their characters Some platforms even list it separately from the main show catalog

Fan reaction

Early reactions describe it as:

more emotional than expected very character-driven a deeper look at Mikey’s tragic background a “return to the heart” of the show’s storytelling

Bottom line

It’s not a new season — it’s a surprise emotional prequel episode that expands the backstory of two key characters and adds more weight to everything that happens in the main series.
