History of Azerbaijan
Azerbaijan, located at the crossroads of Eastern Europe and Western Asia, has a long and layered history shaped by empires, trade, and culture.
Ancient Azerbaijan (Prehistory – 4th century CE)
The region was home to early states like Caucasian Albania (not related to modern Albania). Another important kingdom was Atropatene, which gave Azerbaijan its name. Influenced by the Achaemenid Empire and later by the Parthians and Sasanians. Zoroastrianism was a major religion, with fire temples such as the famous Ateshgah.
Islamic Era (7th – 15th century)
Arab armies brought Islam in the 7th century. Local dynasties like the Shirvanshahs ruled parts of the region. Azerbaijan became an important center along the Silk Road. Later came Turkic influence, especially under the Seljuks.
Persian & Turkic Rule (16th – 19th century)
Azerbaijan was mainly ruled by Persian empires such as the Safavid Empire. It was also contested by the Ottoman Empire. In the early 1800s, after wars with Persia, northern Azerbaijan came under the Russian Empire. Baku became a major center for oil production.
Soviet Azerbaijan (1920–1991)
Azerbaijan became part of the Soviet Union in 1920. Rapid industrialization occurred, especially in oil and gas. National identity remained strong despite Soviet control.
Independence & Modern Era (1991–Present)
Azerbaijan became independent in 1991 after the Soviet collapse. Faced conflict with Armenia over Nagorno-Karabakh. Oil and gas resources helped boost the economy. Today, Azerbaijan continues to develop while managing regional tensions.
