Hashem Abedi, the 28-year-old brother of Manchester Arena suicide bomber Salman Abedi, has refused to leave his cell to face court after being charged with trying to kill three prison officers and possessing makeshift knives inside HMP Frankland.
According to Daily Mail, Abedi, who is already serving a life sentence with a minimum of 55 years for his role in the 2017 Manchester Arena bombing that killed 22 people at an Ariana Grande concert, allegedly attacked prison staff in April this year.
Armed with a pan of hot oil, Abedi is said to have poured it over one officer before stabbing him in the neck with a knife fashioned from a metal cooking tray. Three other officers who rushed to help were also attacked—two needed surgery, while one suffered a broken finger.
The incident adds to his violent record, as he is already serving another sentence for attacking the manager of Belmarsh prison’s high-security unit in 2020.
Despite being scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court via video link, Abedi refused to attend and had no legal representation.
The chief magistrate, Paul Goldspring, noted that the prison governor could authorise the use of force if Abedi continues to resist. The case has been adjourned until September 25.
