The Chiron Was A Last Hurrah For ICE Bugattis
The Super Sport covered this distance in 9.1 seconds at 161 mph, and by the time it had covered half a mile, the speed was 197 mph. Suffice it to say, the Chiron is quick. Quick enough, in fact, to be the fastest turbocharged production car over the quarter mile on the planet. The electronically-limited top speed, if you have another mile (or even less) is 273 mph.
With the latest Bugatti relying on hybrid power, the Chiron Super Sport was very much the last of the line – one last hurrah for the capabilities of big displacement and turbocharging. So it was fitting that this car would be faster than any other turbocharged car that went before it, and possibly any that will come after it too. Bugatti took the original Chiron, which had to make do with a paltry 1,479 horsepower, and completely overhauled the 8.0-liter W16 engine to create the Super Sport.
Modifications were made to the turbochargers, cylinder head with valve train, and oil pump, as well as to the transmission and clutch. These refinements mean that power increased to 1,578 horsepower, while the Chiron’s weight was also reduced by 23 kilograms.
The Chiron Is Blisteringly Fast Over The Quarter Mile
In 2022, a well-known car magazine managed to get hold of a Chiron Super Sport and started to log some startling figures. During speed runs, testers found that the Super Sport will hit 60 mph in 2.2 seconds, 100 mph in 4.1 seconds, 150 mph in 8.0 seconds, and 200 mph in 14.8 seconds. The real eye-opener, however, was the quarter-mile time.
